A lot has happened over the past year in the cyber security landscape. I.T. and security have
changed so much and it is so important that as businesses, that we all need to change with it. Over the next three months, I will be creating a 90-day plan focused on providing you information about current security breaches, how they are affecting businesses, and what you
can do to combat them.
My brain works with analogies and I want to explain a couple through this series.
First, the internet/dark web is like the wild, wild west. Hacker groups are able to do their
work, infect users, and collect money without any sort of repercussions from law enforcement.
The internet is global, so when a business is hacked, it could be coming from anywhere on the
planet, not just your hometown or even country. It is almost impossible for law enforcement to track hackers down and internationally, countries and regions have different laws that don’t always work together. These hacker groups are very sophisticated
and cover their tracks well.
The question is, why are these hacker groups coming after your small business? The answer is
very simple… MONEY. This “business” of hacking is very lucrative. One hacker group called
“Dark Side” has made 90 million dollars hacking small businesses and larger corporations in just nine months. This is one hacking group out of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands. These groups are coming for your data.
So what can be done?
Basic security hygiene is an absolute must in this climate. Most companies are not even doing
the basics or fundamentals.
Over the next 90-days, I will explain in plain English what needs to be done to protect your
business from these hacker groups. I want everyone to know and think about this fact:
it’s not if you will be hacked, it’s when!
